Camp Hale

17 miles N of Leadville on Hwy 24, Camp Hale was established in 1942 to provide winter and mountain warfare training during WWII. The camp was built here because of the setting of a flat valley bottom, surrounded by steep hillsides suitable for training in skiing, rock climbing, and cold weather survival skills. Many ski troopers returned to Colorado after the war and were instrumental in the development of the Colorado ski industry. Today, Camp Hale is a recreation site that can be enjoyed either in hiking boots, or on skis or snowmobiles.

Dog Park

Hiking & Mountain Biking

A perennial favorite in summer months, or to see fall colors! Lake County offers hiking and running trails ranging from easy to advanced, in some of the most scenic spots you can imagine. Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert, both reaching more than 14,400′, are the state’s two highest peaks, but don’t forget the Continental Divide or Colorado Trail. For cyclists, a vast network of trails crisscross the county, ranging from extremely challenging to paved, ADA-accessible trails. Huck Finn Ice Rink

Located at the end of West Fifth Street, the Huck Finn Ice Rink is open from December to March, weather permitting. At 30,000 square feet, this is one of the largest manmade rinks in Colorado. The facility features skate rentals, a snack bar, warming hut, and a great sound system. Open daily in season from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is just $2.25, skate rentals are $1 for kids and $2 for adults.

Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad

Join us for a Colorado adventure you will not forget! Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, this scenic train trip provides 2.5 hours of sightseeing, relaxation, and a little glimpse back in history. The train travels another 1,000 feet above the headwaters of the Arkansas River Valley. You will travel through pine forests, aspen groves and view high alpine meadows sprinkled with an array of colorful wildflowers in mid summer, so always bring your camera!

Leadville National Fish Hatchery

Leadville National Fish Hatchery, established in 1889, is the second oldest Federally operated fish hatchery in existence today. The hatchery grounds occupy 3,072 acres near the city of Leadville. The hatchery welcomes visitors for a closeup view of the fish production process. In addition to the hatchery experience, visitors also have a bounty of nearby recreational opportunities to explore, such as nature trails, picnic areas, and cross-country skiing trails. There’s also access to the Mount Massive Wilderness and the Colorado Trail.

Mount Massive Golf Course

Nestled in the open spaces of the Arkansas River Valley near the river’s headwaters, ringed by the tallest mountains in the state, and surrounded by ranch land and forest, Mt. Massive Golf Course is in a truly spectacular setting. No buildings crowd the fairways; no interstate noise to jar the senses. At 9,680 feet, it’s the highest golf course in North America. Today, this affordable and friendly course caters to over 20,000 rounds annually, but is never overbooked or hurried. It is conditioned and maintained to a level that rivals the nearby resort courses, but with a much lower price tag. Players of all skill levels will find golf at Mt. Massive a challenging course with small-town charm.

Sledding at Dutch Henry

Dutch Henry Sledding Hill is perhaps the highest, fastest sledding hill in all of Colorado, and it’s just a one-minute drive south of downtown on Highway 24. If you bring your own sled or tube, the hill is completely free. Tube rentals are available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $7 per hour on Saturdays and Sundays during the winter.
